Captain Henry Cain is a notable character in the history of Timaru. Captain Henry Cain was a sea captain who also owned and managed the Timaru landing services building.  He later became the second Mayor of Timaru, he died after being fatally poisoned by his son-in-law, Thomas Hall.  Cain died on January 29, 1886.

Made from fibreglass and metal, this sculpture is the work of Akaroa based artist Don Paterson.  Paterson has created a number of historic monuments for places around New Zealand.

This historic statue is located outside the Timaru Information Centre, 2 George Street, Timaru, New Zealand.
