All Creatures Great – Paul Dibble

Inspired by a childhood book which compared the length of a whale to a stack of Elephants, Paul Dibble created this humorous bronze sculpture in 1996.

The whale standing on its tail on one side of the sculpture and the stack of elephants on the other are both endangered species.  Above these creatures rests a fist clutching a plum bob.  Dibble is making the comment that while elephants and whales are great, humans are the species in control and it is up to to us to decide how we treat the planet.

This sculpture is located outside Palmerston North City Library, 4 The Square, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
