Welcome to Selwyn Muru’s seven metre gateway into Aotea square, a brightly coloured welcome into the heart of Auckland City. The title Waharoa translates from Maori into English as gateway or entrance.

Reminiscent of the entrances to meeting houses, Muru turns Aotea square into a place of prominence and of welcoming. His carved arch is covered by a multitude carved symbols specifically recall the pacific such as a piece of tapa cloth or the whale, but many others are universally such as the guitar, the piece symbol or the love heart.

Muru carved this gateway from massive pieces of macrocarpa using a chainsaw alongside more traditional chisels. He has accented with shapes in copper, the copper coming from a wharf in Northland where Muru lives.

This sculpture can be found near the Queen Street entrance to Aotea Squares, Auckland CBD, Auckland, New Zealand.
