This statue of Sir George Grey (1812-1898), honours Grey as soldier, explorer, writer and  twice governor of New Zealand.

This statue was erected in 1904, and shows Grey wearing morning dress. He is carrying a scroll, a nod to his office as a politician. The statue was carved in England by Francis Williamson (sculptor to Queen Victoria) using a single photograph taken of Grey in 1868 as reference. The plinth was carved from Coromandel granite, and Taranaki Scoria by local stone masons Trayes Bros.  On the plinth is inscribed a list of the public offices held by Grey, as well as the Maori  wordste whakaruru hau o te iwi maori i nga ra i mua’, which translates as “shelter of the Maori race/”
