Reasons for Voyaging – Graham Bennett (2003)

Christchurch, New Zealand

A collaboration between local artist Graham Bennett and architect David Cole, this sculpture features seven boat or crescent shapes sitting high on poles.  The boat shape leads us to remember that New Zealand is a country built on migration; viewed as crescent moons the sculptures reference both navigation and the passing of time.  The seven poles are placed in such away that pedestrians must weave their way through them, causing them to interact with both the sculpture and the adjacent Christchurch Art Gallery building.

This sculpture is located outside the Montreal Street entrance to the Christchurch Art Gallery, Christchurch, New Zealand.
