Commissioned by the Manawatu Art Gallery in 1992, this 4.4 metre bronze took local sculptor Paul Dibble three years to complete.  It was unveiled in 1995 and stands outside Palmerston North’s Te Manawa a museum, art gallery and science centre located on Main Street.

This sculpture acknowledges all those from different cultures who have settled in the Manawatu.  The barnacles on the legs indicate a sea voyage, the blindfold represents stepping into the darkness. In one hand the figure holds a globe symbolising the diversity of arrivals, the other hand holds a plum bob, a tool used by builders speaking to the idea of creating a new home.

Paul Dibble lives and works in Palmerston North.  He moved to Palmerston North from Auckland in 1977 to teach painting and sculpture at the Palmerston North College of Education.  Pacific Monarch is Dibble’s first public sculpture.

This sculpture is located outside Te Manawa, 326 Main Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
