Light on the Land – Howard Tuffery (2016)

Local Taranaki artist Howard Tuffery is better known for his sculptures made from wood and stone.  In this case his sculpture Light on the Land is made from stainless steel polished to a mirror finish.  The sculpture is six metres long, 2.7 metres high and 2.5 metres deep.  The curves in the sculpture creates distorted mirror images, much like a fun house mirror.

Tuffery says that the curves hold strong connections to the land, the peak and curves reflect the Taranaki landscape both literally and metaphorically.  He hopes that because the reflections on the sculpture mirror both the sky and the land people will use it as way to contemplate their environment.

Light on the Land is one of a number of sculptures installed along New Plymouth’s Coastal Walkway.
