Achy Breaky Heart – Michael Parekowhai (2016)

This sculpture is essentially a wall of long rectangular blocks stacked to make bright patterns.  These rectangular blocks represent cuisenaire rods which were developed in the 9150s to teach maths in primary school.  Each coloured rod represented a number value, for example white was one, pink was four, orange was nine and red was ten.

In this piece Parekowhai pays homage to the Piet Mondrian painting Broadway Boogie Woogie which contains bright primary colours and references a type of music and dance. In the same way this work references one of the best known country pop songs of the 90’s, and country music’s companion the line dance.

Thei sculpture is located on ASB North Wharf, Jellicoe Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland, New Zealand.
